Kosiv painted ceramics.

It can be said that this design was born out of great pride for the creative heritage that we have. Kosiv painted ceramics is an art that reflects the subtlety of Ukrainian soul, its deep creativity in all its manifestations and its originality. Even at routine household levels Ukrainians strive to surround themselves with thought-provoking symbols as well as painted household utensils pleasing to the eye and soul.

Kosiv ceramics is about both beauty and usefulness. Nothing is without sense. Since ancient times Ukrainians have ascribed certain sense to everything, however small the thing is. Therefore, the sense we ascribed to this design in the process of its development is connected with continuing life and expending the use of this phenomenon of Ukrainian folk art.

The development of this type of folk art was facilitated by the availability of rich deposits of potter’s clay in these territories. Town of Pistyn. The first written mention of it dates back to 1375. It is from Pistyn that the oldest ceramic items originate. From here the craft spread to Kosiv, and later to Kuty.

Hutsul ceramics production technique – “engraving” – is painting of an item covered with white clay and dried. After the first firing in a pottery kiln the product is painted with green, brown, yellow, less often blue paint. Then the product is covered with transparent glaze and is subjected to the second kiln firing. This technique is unique, one of a kind in the whole world. The samples that inspired us are located in the Y. Kobrynsky National Museum of Hutsulshchyna and Pokuttia Folk Art and its branch – Kosiv Museum of Folk Art and Life.
