The Women Friends Gustav Klimt, 1916 – 1917
Two women facing each other in a close embrace are depicted on the kerchief. The painting is also known under the name “Two Daisies”.
The girlfriends are arranged unconventionally in the composition and depicted in a bright colour scheme. The luxurious decor and variety of colours create the impression of an intimate atmosphere and exotic beauty.
The girls are depicted in a minimal amount of clothing, with rich ornaments and colorful motifs characteristic of the art nouveau style, in which Klimt worked. The girlfriends have gentle and dreamy facial expressions; their postures are gently interwoven producing the sense of unity and intimacy. They can be perceived as symbols of female sexuality and friendship. They interact with each other with a seductive energy, expressing openness and confidence.
At the same time, they have fragile and plastic movements causing a feeling of admiration and tenderness.
