The painting tells us the whole story: how a girl transforms into a woman.
The artist depicts this process through a dream of a young girl surrounded by half-naked women, who are images from her dream. They are slanted and turned away into oblivion; the women look peaceful and heartwarming.
This is also confirmed by the contrast between the softly outlined images of the women and the rough fabric of the blankets covering their bodies.
Painting the fabric of the blankets, Klimt use spirals – a symbol of infinity and immortality. For him, a woman is the source of eternal life, which the girl depicted in the painting is not aware of yet.
