Description

Dnipropetrivsk region, village of Petrykivka – it is where this cultural phenomenon of Ukrainian folk art originates from. Petrykivka painting flourishes on the walls of peasant wattle and daub houses, and that is precisely why the white colour of the background is predetermined. The choice of the colour range for our kerchiefs is not random as well – the basis of the canonical colour palette consists of yellow, red, blue and green colours.

The favourite red colour was obtained from cherry juice, green – from wheatgrass and nightshade leaves, blue – from snowdrop flowers. Different shades of yellow were obtained from sunflower petals, onion peel and bark of apple sprouts. Paints were diluted in egg yolk and milk to make them more durable, and fixed with cherry glue or beet sugar. And, of course, paints were applied with a famous brush made of cat’s hair. But viburnum bunches were painted with fingers.

In 2013 this original folk art was included into the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

These beautiful designs for our kerchiefs were created by Anna Verbych, a decorative art master of Ukraine’s Art Community.
