From May 1889 Vincent spent weeks painting irises in the garden of the asylum where he lived during that period of his life.
The truncated composition divided into wide areas of bright colour with masterpiece irises shimmering all over was probably created under the influence of the decorative pattern of Japanese woodcut engravings. This is the most recognizable and famous canvas of the Dutch genius artist. Van Gogh himself considered it a study. His brother Theo quickly recognized the value of the painting, having written the following words to him: “it strikes the eye from afar; it is a beautiful study full of air and life.” Vincent carefully studied their colours and shapes to create a variety of curved silhouettes, plastic and sinuous lines.
