It is a part of the thematic cycle about water nymphs. This is an allegorical work of Klimt. During the creation of this canvas Klimt experienced a scandalous case connected with his works for the University of Vienna – the paintings commissioned by the state turned out to be too innovative for that time and were harshly criticized. So Klimt wanted to name the painting “To My Critics”, but his friends managed to talk him out of it despite his fiery personality. The painting shows several naked smiling beauties with long flowing red hair carelessly playing in the dark watery depths together with a huge goldfish. The main female figure, crouching in the foreground, has turned around and is mockingly looking the viewer straight in the eyes, shamelessly demonstrating her butt.
