From letters: “Instead of trying to reproduce exactly what I see before me, I make an arbitrary use of colour to express myself more forcefully”. In fact, he did not just observe the nature – he responded to it with every fiber of his being. Each of his canvases is a materialized experience; every stroke is a gesture, response or impulse.
In his last letter to Theo Vincent admitted that since he had no children, he considered his paintings his offspring. Reflecting on it, the historian Simon Schama concluded that he “did have a child of course, Expressionism, and many, many heirs”.
